Military Preparedness – 4 Tips for Safe Fuel and Oil Storage

Fuel and oil supplies are critical for mission preparedness in the military. The U.S. Navy has similar needs for fleet readiness. Every base requires its military equipment to be fully supplied and ready to deploy at any time. But, storage space is limited. Many military facilities combine operational and storage needs in single-use buildings. This poses potential safety risks or fails to meet flammable liquid storage requirements.

How can you maintain high safety standards and military preparedness at the same time? Follow these four tips.

1. Be Knowledgeable to Flammable Liquid Storage Requirements

Fuel and oil are flammable products. OSHA 1910.106 and NFPA 30 provide guidelines for storing flammable liquids. NFPA 68 or 69 regulates dispensing flammables if mixing or dispensing is required inside the building.

Within these codes are specifications for storing flammable liquid. Contrary to common use, intermodal containers (also known as ISO containers or Conex boxes) do not meet these flammable liquid storage requirements. These containers do not have internal containment sumps or a non-combustible construction. Inspections around their bases are impossible due to how they sit on the ground.

2. Separate Military Operations from Storage

Keeping stocks of fuel and oils inside hangars with aircraft is not a safe practice and does not meet OSHA and NFPA flammable liquid storage requirements. It also takes up valuable hangar space needed for equipment and maintenance activities.

Keep flammable materials away from people. Fuel and oil fires spread rapidly. Ensure the safety of personnel by keeping fuel supplies out of operational areas.

In addition to people, you should also protect valuable military equipment from the devastating consequences of a fire. Keep military equipment in a TEMF (Tactical Equipment Maintenance Facility), and petroleum, oil, and lubes in a POL (Petroleum, Oil and Lubricants storage facility).

3. Use Compliant Storage Solutions

Our chemical storage buildings comply with all relevant flammable liquid storage requirements and codes. NFPA requires different levels of fire rating depending on the storage building’s location in relation to an occupied building. If the storage building needs to be inside of, or within 10 feet of an occupied building – it must be 4-hour fire-rated. From 10 to 30 feet away only requires a 2-hour fire-rating. Any distance further than 30 feet can be non-fire rated.

Many safety features are available for our chemical storage buildings. Fire suppression systems automatically extinguish a fire in the building and automatically close fire dampers and shutdown ventilation systems. Remote alarms and monitoring systems immediately alert you of any problems. A key compliance feature is the secondary containment sump, which is part of the building construction and captures spills and leaks inside the building.

4. Get Expert Advice from a Trusted Partner

Military leadership has the formidable task of managing personnel and equipment for military operations. Mission preparedness is critical at all times. While flammable liquid storage is an important part of this function, it is impossible for military leaders to be experts in the compliance and safety issues related to this function.

Thus, seeking the expertise of a reputable company like U.S. Chemical Storage is vital. As an industry leader in fuel and oil storage for the military, we provide expert advice, audits of existing facilities and solutions that work.
