Cannabis Extraction Safety Lessons from the Sand Springs Explosion

A deadly explosion at a cannabis facility in Sand Springs, Oklahoma, on August 27 has led to the owner being charged with two counts of first-degree murder after two of his employees died in the blast. Court documents and investigators identified a series of alleged safety, equipment, and compliance issues dating back to a January 2026 inspection.
The damage was catastrophic to Solos Extracts and the surrounding businesses in the community located near Tulsa. Solos Extracts operated a THC extraction facility that utilized flammable compressed gases like propane and butane.
According to investigators, and reported by Associated Press, one of the victims told paramedics that the indoor space lacked adequate ventilation and that the explosion ignited when he unplugged a piece of equipment.
According to investigators, the facility was operating with awaiting updated Oklahoma Marijuana Authority and Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics licenses. The Fire Marshal had previously ordered the owner to disconnect extraction equipment immediately upon inspection in January of 2026.
