Fertilizer Storage Regulations for On-Farm and Off-Farm Applications
More attention is being focused on fertilizer storage regulations regarding flammable fertilizer products since the aftermath of the West Fertilizer Co. in West, Texas on April 17 that killed 14 people and injured more than 200 others. Attention is being focused on retail as well as on-farm locations. There are some states that have on-farm fertilizer regulations implemented, where others do not have any rules governing fertilizer storage on the farm.
According to The Fertilizer Institute (TFI), 12 states have fertilizer storage regulations that are tailored for their on-farm situations. The states that do have fertilizer storage regulations in place, regarding on-farm situations are: Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New York, Ohio and Washington. States not listed do not have on-site fertilizer storage regulations in place.
Fertilizer Storage Regulations Offer Compliance
On-site or on-farm fertilizer storage provides farmers with a convenient way to access fertilizer, even though keeping large quantities of fertilizer storage on-farm can increase the chance of an explosion or fire. The West Texas blast has impacted fertilizer storage regulations on state and federal levels.
