A Manager of Environmental Health and Safety has many duties within the workplace. It is a job intended to ensure a safe environment in and around the facility, for the protection of personnel. Environmental Health and Safety Managers’ duties include regular inspections and hazard assessments of the work environment in order to detect and identify any hazardous situations. A Manager of Environmental Health and Safety should be able to operate personal protective equipment, as well as direct other personnel in the proper usage of such equipment. There are countless other duties as well, and some are outlined below:

  • Assess work area for hazards and analyze material samples,
  • Develop (through consultation with local governments), present, and implement safety policies and safe work techniques,
  • Investigate any dangerous incidents, assessing the work area for additional hazards,
  • Establish and implement fire drills and emergency response plans,
  • Maintain pertinent OSHA reports,
  • Provide leadership for other personnel through safety training,
  • Plan and coordinate safety programs,
  • Provide safety consultations,
  • Interpret and ensure compliance with ever-changing federal, state, and local government regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Every company has different qualifications for the position of Manager of Environmental Health and Safety. Most require at least a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health and Safety, although some accept high school graduates who have undergone health and safety training programs. It is important for applicants to possess leadership skills in order to implement safety policies. Language skills enable EHS Managers to interpret and effectively communicate safety regulations. Keen attention to detail would greatly benefit a Manager of Environmental Health and Safety, enabling him or her to detect hazardous situations, some of which may be overlooked by the average worker. Mathematical skills are also a plus, giving the Manager of Environmental Health and Safety the ability to analyze data and work with numerical figures. Finally, reasoning skills can help the Manager solve hazardous situations and design safety policies.
